The city of Lucknow maintains an unusual relationship with the Hindi cinema or Bollywood, biggest entertainment industry in the country. Its influence is best assessed through it being the birthplace of yesteryear poetK. P. Saxena; dialogue, scriptwriterSuresh Chandra Shukla wjo took birth on 10 February 1954besides famous Bengali plus Hindi film actor Pahari Sanyal taking birth in the city. The Sanyal family remained one of the prestigious families of this city. Filmmakers have chosen Lucknow to film many movies. Take for example Lucknow backdrop seen in Shashi Kapoor's Junoon, Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan and Gaman, Satyajit Ray's Shatranj ke khiladi besides Shakespeare Wallahand PAA by Ismail Merchant.

Lucknow had been usedto project s Pakistan in the movie Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. Prime locations of this city like Lal Pul, the Taj Hotel and the Rumi Darwaza had been used in Tanu Weds Manu movie. Likewise few scenes of movies like Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, Bullett Raja,Ishaqzaade, Dabangg 2 and Ya Rabhad been filmed in Lucknow and sites close to it. Large portion of a Hindi movie, Daawat-e-Ishq was shot in Lucknow that starred Aditya Roy Kapur and Parineeti Chopra. Indian TV drama Baawre is shot in this city and broadcast in Life OK channel in the country.


Second oldest Indian English language newspaper, The Pioneer was headquartered in Lucknow since its beginning in 1865 that still has its multi editions. With the founding editor Manikonda Chalapathi Rau, first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru founded The National Herald in Lucknow before World War II broke out.

Many of country’s prestigious English languages dailies such as The Times of India, Hindustan Times, North India Times, The Pioneer and The Indian Express have their editions from Lucknow. Likewise, numerous Urdu and Hindi daily newspapers are published from this city. Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala, Rashtriya Sahara, Dainik Hindustan, I Next, Jansatta and Swatantra Bharat are the Hindi newspapers published from here. Likewise, Inquilab, Rozanama Rashtriya Sahara, Sahafat, Avadhnama, Qaumi Khabrein, Aag, Roznama Urduand Subahnama Urduet al are famous Urdu newspaper published from here.

It was in 1938 that country’s few of the earliest All India Radio stations operated from Lucknow city.
